As the high school baseball season gets ready to hit the stretch drive for teams in the Southern Crescent, several key games are on tap the rest of the week.
No. 1 ranked Luella went on a bit of a roller coaster ride last week. The Lions knocked off East Coweta 7-6 in a Region 2-AAAAA game, but then lost 11-3 to Pike County in a non region game.
The Region 2-AAAAA regular-season title appears to be a battle between the Lions and Newnan. Both teams are tied with just one loss, but right now the Lions hold the tiebreaker.
Luella (7-1 Region 2-AAAAA) handed Newnan (9-1) its only region loss earlier this year. The two teams play again on April 26 in the next to last regular season game for Luella when the Lions travel to Newnan.
Today, Luella plays host to Stephenson and then goes to M.L. King on Friday.
Mundy's Mill has spent several weeks in the Gasports. com Class AAAA Coaches' poll ranked No. 5. After two losses, the Tigers are playing a waiting game to see if they will still be ranked when the new poll comes out later this week.
After the best start in school history, the Tigers dropped decisions to Redan and Jonesboro.
Those are the only two losses against Georgia teams this year.
The Tigers (13-1 Region 4-AAAA) still have a two-game lead over Jonesboro (9-3) in the Region 4-AAAA standings.
Mundy's Mill plays at Tri-Cities on Thursday and at home against Lovejoy on Friday.
Eagle's Landing Christian dropped out of the Gasports Class A poll last week for the first time all season when First Presbyterian took the Chargers' spot in the No. 10 spot. The day the new poll was released,
ELCA beat First Presbyterian.
Ranked or unranked, the Chargers are in a virtual tie with Landmark Christian at the top of the Region 9-A standings. Both teams have a 6-2 record in league play.
The Chargers take to the road for important league games this week as they travel to Our Lady of Mercy today.
On Thursday, first place is on the line when ELCA travels to Landmark.
Landmark holds the tiebreaker going into this week's game after beating the Chargers 9-1 in the teams' first meeting of the year.
