The AMC network is filming one of its TV series, "The Walking Dead," in Hampton.

It's set to air on AMC this fall. The "Walking Dead" tells the story of the weeks and months that follow after the apocalypse, and how the main characters have to navigate their way through the new environment of metro Atlanta, said the Unit Publicist for the TV show, Brandee Brooks.

"The show was nominated this morning for "Best Drama Series," Critic's Choice Television Awards," said Brooks. The winners will be revealed June 20.

The Walking Dead is an epic, edge-of-your-seat drama where personal struggles are magnified against a backdrop of moment-to-moment survival. A survivalist story at its core, the series explores how the living are changed by the overwhelming realization that those who survive can be far more dangerous than the mindless walkers roaming the earth. They themselves have become the walking dead, according to the show's website.

Monday was the first day of production on season two. The "Walking Dead" production employs approximately 160 people. The cast and crew are scheduled to be on location in Hampton until Wednesday, said Brooks.

"This is the second season for the show," she said. "Season one was shot in and around Atlanta, and season two will also be shot in the metro Atlanta area. Season two consists of 13 episodes that will shoot throughout the greater Atlanta area."

"[We are] returning to Atlanta for [the] second season because Atlanta treated production so well," added Brooks.

Officials closed Ga. Highway 20 at the intersection of East Main Street, and at the intersection of Lower Woolsey Road, which is near Ga. Highway 1941, said Hampton Police Capt. Derrick Austin.

The area will be closed until Thursday afternoon, according to Austin.

"We have not received any complaints," said the police captain. "It [the detour] is well marked and detour signs were up a week prior to closing."

All of the permits to close the section of Ga. Highway 20 were approved by the Georgia Department of Transportation, added Austin.

The "Walking Dead" AMC series is based on Robert Kirkman's popular comic book series. It is written and executive-produced by three-time Academy(R) Award-nominee Frank Darabont ("The Shawshank Redemption," and "The Green Mile"), and executive-produced by Gale Anne Hurd ("The Terminator," and "Aliens").
