Flour Power: sweets and treats from scratch

Mary Riddle, of Hampton, was on her way home from a doctor’s visit with her husband, John, when something caught her attention, and attracted her sweet tooth.

“We’re always looking for a good bakery,” she said. “The bakery down the road from us closed. We like to get really good birthday cakes. We have a lot of birthdays, for our grandchildren and our relatives. We like to get home-baked birthday cakes.”

Before the afternoon was over, the couple had purchased sandwiches and desserts from Flour Power, a new bakery, in Stockbridge. It is open from 7 a.m., to 6 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays, and on Saturdays, from 8 a.m., to 3 p.m. Flour Power is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Jessica Brannon, who was born in Riverdale, is the owner of Flour Power, which launched July 23, at 103 Eagle’s Landing Pkwy. She opened the business because of a desire to feed her passion for the culinary arts.

“Baking has always been one of my favorite things to do, and I’ve wanted to open a bakery since I was a teenager,” said Brannon. “I finally got the chance, and I took it.”

Brannon said one of the main strengths at Flour Power lies in the uniqueness of its offerings. Those dishes include kolaches, Czechoslovakian breads filled with meats and cheeses, which are served at breakfast and lunch.

“We do some traditional things, like cinnamon rolls, sausage biscuits, ... danishes,” the owner said. “Whatever our customers like, we try to keep that on the menu, and that’s how we’ve built our menu. Our breakfast menu stays pretty standard, and then we branch off to pretty much a brand-new menu every day, for all the sweets and the different things that we do.”

All items which are sold individually, at Flour Power, are available for $5 or less.

“We sell everything as an individual serving, and then if you want a special order, we can do a whole cake,” Brannon said.

She added that another benefit for customers is that the food at Flour Power is made fresh every day.

“Everything that we do is from scratch,” said Brannon. “We get here around 4:30 a.m., every morning. We just want to make sure that it’s not something you can get at a grocery store or a chain store, or something from a box. It’s all going to be our personal recipes that we’ve tried out.

“If we don’t like it, we throw it away,” she said. “We’re not going to put anything out that we don’t approve of. All of our leftovers, we try to donate to a charitable cause.”

Brannon said agencies which have benefited from the excesses of Flour Power’s efforts include the Henry County Fire Department, and A Friend’s House, a children’s shelter, in McDonough. She said she hopes Flour Power will be seen by area residents as a centrally-located stop for people to stop on their way to school, work, or on the way home in the evening.

Brannon prepares delicacies at the bakery with the assistance of her mother, Lisa Brannon, and baker, Linda Moffenbier. The Flour Power owner said she enjoys building her business with her mom, in particular.

“It’s awesome,” Jessica Brannon said. “She knows exactly what I need her to do, and she makes sure that we get it done.”

Lisa Brannon said she is proud of her daughter’s accomplishments in the new business.

“It’s her dream come true,” the mother said. “It’s just a blessing to me, because it’s everything she’s ever wanted to have.”

Jessica Brannon added that, although Flour Power has only been open just over a month, the response from the public has been positive.

“People are very excited to have a real bakery in town,” she said. “We try to be more well-rounded. I think it’s more exciting for people to try new things each time they come in.”
