Murder Charge

Man found dead in driveway, cops say

STOCKBRIDGE — A Stockbridge man sits in jail facing murder charges and stands accused of shooting and killing an acquaintance who was found dead in his driveway following an argument, early Thursday.

John Davis Blair, 49, appeared before Judge Robert L. Godwin in Henry County Magistrate Court Friday after he was accused by police of killing Richard [Brian] Culpepper.

Judge Godwin bound the case over to Henry County Superior Court.

Henry County Police released very few details surrounding the incident, and declined to give a motive for the shooting.

“This is a very active investigation,” said Henry Police Sgt. Joey Smith.

However, Smith did say the victim and suspect were involved in an argument prior to the shooting.

“They were acquaintances,” said Smith. “A dispute developed which led to the shooting,” he said.

Police were called to Blair’s home at 190 Highland Blvd., on Thursday, around 1 a.m., reports indicate.

“Upon their arrival they reported finding Culpepper, 30, deceased outside and in the driveway of the residence,” said Smith.

“The victim does not live at the location,” he continued, but is a Stockbridge resident, added Smith.

“Blair is the only suspect involved in the shooting,” Smith emphasized.

The warrant states, “While in the commission of a felony, to-wit aggravated assault caused the death of Richard [Brian] Culpepper by shooting the said victim with a pistol.”

Blair remained in the Henry County Jail at press time.
