Henry County may not have high school lacrosse, but the sport is still thriving and looking for players to take up the sport this fall.
The Henry County Lacrosse Association is in the middle of registration for fall club lacrosse teams for boys and girls. The HCLA offers programs for players from kindergarten through high school for boy and middle school and high school for girls.
The cost for elementary school boys and middle school boys and girls programs is $75. High school boys and girls costs $105.
“The fall lacrosse program gives us an opportunity to introduce new players to the sport of lacrosse,” said Jeremy Porter, a coach with HCLA and one of the organization’s founders, “while giving current players the opportunity to improve their skills before the spring season.”
The HCLA is also beefing up its program for elementary school boys. Fall season consisted of just practices last year. Now, Porter said there will be a 7-game season.
It’s another sign of the sport’s growth in Henry County. The HCLA started six years ago with just a handful of players. Porter expects over 200 throughout the program this fall.
“It’s exciting to see the program grow at all age groups,” Porter said.
That’s also the idea behind two free clinics HCLA is offering — an elementary school clinic Saturday from 9:30-11:30 a.m., and a middle school clinic Sunday from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Both will be at East Lake Elementary School.
Porter said this is the time of year for players interested in the sport to give it a try. The fall programs are cheaper and are less of a commitment.
“It’s a great chance to test drive lacrosse before diving in full speed come spring,” Porter said.
