A well-known group of singers is preparing for its first-ever performance in Henry County, as part of Black History Month.
The Spelman College Glee Club is scheduled to perform, Jan. 29, at 5 p.m., at the Eagle’s Landing Country Club, in Stockbridge. Admission is $20 for adults, and $10 for children 12 and under. The event is open to members and non-members of the country club.
“We wanted something to promote, and recognize, Black History Month and Martin Luther King, Jr.,” said Anne Belcher, member relations coordinator for the country club. “One of our members is an [alumna] from Spelman, and she suggested some type of performance, or a concert — something that Henry County doesn’t see a lot of. They’re such an acclaimed, nationally known group, and we just thought a performance with this caliber of music would be appreciated in this area.”
Belcher added that the Spelman College Glee Club has maintained “a reputation of choral excellence” for more than 50 years. The group’s repertoire, she said, consists of sacred and secular choral literature, with an emphasis on traditional spirituals, music by black composers and other cultures, as well as commissioned works.
“The Spelman College Glee Club has traveled throughout the country performing for a variety of audiences,” said Belcher. “It has performed in iconic concert halls, such as Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center, Fanueil Hall in Boston, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York. Their international travels have taken them to Brazil and Canada.”
The ensemble also appeared with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra at Symphony Hall with the world-renowned singer, Jessye Norman, and was previously featured on National Public Radio.
“Major performances of the Spelman Glee Club include the Spelman-Morehouse Christmas Carol Concert, the Spring Concert Tour, the Annual Fall and Spring Concerts at Spelman, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Special Birthday Concert,” said Eagle’s Landing Country Club’s social committee chairman, Ron Aiken.
“We, as a community, will be fortunate, indeed, to have the Spelman College Glee Club, under the direction of Dr. Kevin Johnson, assistant professor of music, perform here at Eagle’s Landing Country Club,” Aiken added.
For reservations, call Anne Belcher at (770) 389-2000.
Tickets can also be purchased at Grace Management, located at 325 Country Club Drive, in Stockbridge.
