Rev. Alfred Luther Key, of Hartwell, Ga., was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, June 28, 2012, at Charlie Norwood Veterans Administration Medical Center. He was born in Augusta, on Aug. 18, 1925, to Luther Moody and Lucy Chavous Key.
He served his country honorably during WWII in the U.S. Navy. Rev. Key was an avid sportsman and excelled in all types of sports. He was a life member of the Masons, and also participated in numerous civic organizations throughout his life. Rev. Key graduated from Richmond Academy in Augusta, the University of Georgia and Emory at Oxford.
Rev. Key is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty Key; one daughter and one son; two grandaughters and one great-grandson. He is preceded in death by his father, mother and brother, Eugene E. Key.
Services were held on July 1, at 3 p.m., in the chapel of Wheeler Funeral Home, Covington, Ga. Interment was held at Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home on Sunday, July 1, from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fisher House @ CNVAMC c/o Augusta Warrior Project 1190 Interstate Parkway Augusta, Ga. 30909, or United Methodist Children’s Home 500 South Columbia Drive Decatur, Ga. 30030. Wheeler Funeral Home and Crematory, 11405 Brown Bridge Road, Covington, Ga., was in charge of services.
