HENRY SCHOOL NOTEBOOK: UGA-Griffin hosts academic showcase, June 14

The University of Georgia at Griffin campus will host an Academic Program Showcase on June 14, from noon until 2 p.m., providing prospective students the opportunity to learn more about its available degree programs.

The event, which will be held in the Student Learning Center, will allow guests to meet with academic program coordinators to talk about degree curricula and career opportunities, as well as meet the admissions counselors who will offer guidance in the application process to UGA.

The Griffin campus serves the Southern Crescent region, which includes Henry County and Clayton County. The public is encouraged to stop by for a tour of the campus, Mondays through Fridays, from 8 a.m., until 4:30 p.m. For more information about the UGA-Griffin campus, visit http://uga.edu/griffin.

UGHS grads get perfect attendance recognition

Connor Legg and Shaun Eidson recently graduated with perfect attendance records at Union Grove High School in McDonough. School officials recognized the pair, now high school graduates, during the school’s commencement ceremonies on May 25. Legg recorded perfect attendance from K4 through 12th grade, while classmate Eidson recorded perfect attendance from first through 12th grade.

Slaughter graduates McCallie School

McDonough native Preston Slaughter recently graduated from the McCallie School, a college preparatory school for boys in Chattanooga, Tenn. Slaughter, the son of Jason and Shernell Slaughter of McDonough, plans to attend Oglethorpe University.

Locals earn honors at Mars Hill College

McDonough resident Na’Imah Anderson and Stockbridge resident Spencor Luke Hall were named to the Honor Roll of the Academic Dean for the Spring 2012 Semester at Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C. To qualify for the Dean’s List, students must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 on a minimum of 12 semester hours, and carry no grade below a C.

Conrad named to LaGrange College Dean’s List

Thomas Conrad Clevenger of Locust Grove was recently named to the LaGrange College Spring 2012 Semester Dean’s List. To be eligible for this honor, students must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.6 while taking a minimum course load of 12 hours.

Henry residents achieve at Young Harris College

Kaitlyn Jo Holcomb, Chinonyerem Ijeoma Osuji, and Anne Catherine Ponce, each graduated with bachelor of science degrees this spring from Young Harris College.

Holcomb was awarded a degree in outdoor leadership. A graduate of Luella High School, she is the daughter of Elizabeth Smith, of Hampton, and Eric Holcomb, of McDonough. Osuji was awarded a degree in biology. Osuji, a graduate of Dutchtown High School, is the daughter of Joseph and Rita Osuji, of Stockbridge. Ponce, a Luella High School graduate, also was awarded degree in biology. She is the daughter of Francisco and Helen Ponce, of McDonough.

Additionally, Young Harris honored two local students for their academic achievement.

McDonough resident Collin James Rodgers, the son of Davis and Vicky Rodgers, of McDonough, has been named to the Young Harris College President’s List for the Spring 2012 Semester. To be named to the President’s List, students who achieve a 4.0 GPA. Rodgers, a junior biology major at Young Harris College, is a graduate of Eagles Landing Christian Academy.

Matthew Lloyd Anderson, of Stockbridge, was recently named to the Young Harris College Dean’s List for the Spring 2012 Semester. Students who achieve a 3.5 GPA or higher are eligible to be named to the Dean’s List. Anderson, a freshman science major at Young Harris College, is a graduate of Woodland High School. He is the son of Douglas and Debora Anderson, of Stockbridge.

Military notes

Army Spec. Jarryd Mitchell has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. Mitchell is the son of Katherine Mitchell, of McDonough, and grandson of Annie Mitchell, of Jackson, Miss. The specialist, a 2006 graduate of Eagle’s Landing High School, earned a bachelor’s degree in 2010 from Valdosta State University.

Air Force Airman Lance Ellerbe graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Ellerbe, the son of Mae Ellerbe of McDonough, is a 2010 graduate of Eagle’s Landing High School.
