Two people died following an accident on I-75 over the weekend.
Henry County fire and police departments responded to the fatal crash, Friday, at 11:44 p.m. The accident happened near the 227-mile marker, at the Clayton and Henry County line.
Henry County Police Sgt. Joey Smith said the crash involved a quadriplegic driver, of a Chrysler minivan with two occupants.
The van was traveling northbound on I-75 “when for unknown reasons, the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree,” said Smith.
“On arrival, Henry County Fire Department personnel found a vehicle with extensive damage and two critical patients trapped,” said Henry County Fire Capt. Sabrina Puckett. “Although extrication was initiated quickly and aggressively, it was not enough for the critically injured occupants entangled in the wreckage,” she added.
“The driver, Jesse Karns, 27, and back-seat passenger, Trevell Brown, 22, were pronounced deceased at the scene,” said Smith. “The front-seat passenger, Devin Davis, 22, was taken to Atlanta Medical Center, but was released with relatively minor injuries.”
Davis told police he was asleep at the time of the auto accident and was “unaware” of why the van left the roadway.
The driver was a quadriplegic who was injured during training accident while in the Army. His vehicle was equipped to so that he could drive, according to Smith.
All three victims of the auto accident were from Tampa, Fla.
The cause of the accident is undetermined, and is under investigation, added Smith.
