Jeff Hurndon Photography Union Grove quarterback Jonathan Slade threw a touchdown pass that gave the Wolverines the lead for good in their 21-7 win over Ola on Friday.
Travis Custis rushed for 98 yards and four touchdowns as Lovejoy pounds visiting Rockdale 41-0 during homecoming ceremonies at Twelve Oaks Stadium on Friday.
The senior running back only needed 10 carries for his scoring outburst in the Region 2-AAAAAA contest. Lovejoy improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the region.
Terry Henderson and Jeff Murphy had a touchdown reception each.
Before the game, Lovejoy coach Al Hughes was given a signed football in recognition of his 100th coaching victory, which he got last week against Druid Hills in the region opener.
Union Grove 21, Ola 7
Derrick Craine rushed for two touchdowns and the Wolverines took advantage of two big plays on special teams for a Region 4-AAAAA victory Friday at home.
Union Grove improves to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the region. Ola falls to 1-4 and 0-1.
Mustangs quarterback C.J. Carr gave Ola an early lead with a long touchdown run in the first quarter.
But it was all Union Grove from there.
Craine rushed for his first touchdown on the next possession. The Wolverines went up 8-7 after a successful 2-point conversion pass from Eric Forest to Gage Temples.
Union Grove pulled away with its special teams play. Demetrius Jackson blocked a field goal to set up Caleb Hamm’s touchdown catch from Wolverines quarterback Jonathan Slade for a 15-7 lead at halftime. Dalton Tumlin blocked a punt inside Ola’s 20-yard line to set up Craine’s second touchdown.
Luella 49, Druid Hills 7
The Lions got a new school record, a college commitment and their first win of the season in a Region 2-AAAAAA victory at home.
Luella improves to 1-5 overall and 1-1 in the region.
Jared Hendricks threw for two touchdowns, one to Mannie Lowrey and Trae Bonner, who also rushed for a touchdown.
Laaquez Freemon and Gabe Smith each rushed for a touchdown. Smith and Tevin Jones both recovered a fumble for a touchdown.
Jones, a defensive lineman and one of the Henry Daily Herald’s pre-season ‘12 Most Wanted,’ committed to Georgia State earlier in the day.
Lions kicker Andrew Roberts set a new school record by going a perfect 7-for-7 on extra-points.
