Haylee Hester hit a game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh of Game 2 to give No. 7-ranked Ola a series-clinching 1-0 win at Lee County in the Class AAAAA first round on Wednesday.
The Lady Mustangs manufactured the game-winning run in classic softball style. Marissa Garcia hit a lead-off single and moved to third base on consecutive sacrifice bunts by Jordan Doggett and Morgan Bradford.
Sophomore pitcher Raya Moncus earned the win. Savannah McHellon pitched Ola to a 2-0 victory in Game 1.
The Lady Mustangs (20-7-2) advance to play No. 5-ranked Greenbrier, the top seed out of Region 2, in the second round next Wednesday.
Woodland 11-20, Albany 0-0
Hosting a state playoff game for the first time in program history, the Lady Wolfpack cruised to a series sweep over Albany in the Class AAAA first round.
Bethany Osif pitched consecutive shutouts for Woodland (19-11). She allowed two hits and struck out eight in five complete innings in Game 1 then gave up just one hit and struck out four in a Game 2’s three-inning victory.
Danielle Castleberry was 5-for-7 with six RBIs and two doubles in the series.
Leah Bergen went 2-for-3 with a double in Game 1. Taesha Duboise was 4-for-4 with four runs scored in Game 2, while Lexee Emmanuel added a two-run home run.
Woodland advances to play the winner of South Effingham-Perry.
Locust Grove 8-10, Cairo 0-2
The Lady Wildcats cruised to a first-round sweep of the visiting Lady Syrupmakers in the Class AAAA playoffs.
Alexis Longmire got the win in Game 1 for Locust Grove (23-8-1). She allowed just two hits in six innings for a complete game shutout. Madison Couch hit a home run, and Mary Emily added three hits.
Freshman Eli Daniel got the win in Game 2 allowing just four hits over five complete innings. Allee Denney and Lauren Foster each had two hits. Morgan Edwards had two hits and three RBI.
Locust Grove will play at Wayne County (22-2), the top seed out of Region 3 and a 5-0, 6-3 winner over Veterans, next Wednesday.
Union Grove 2-6, Northside-Columbus 0-0
The top-ranked Lady Wolverines moved on in the Class AAAAA tournament with a pair of shutout victories at home.
Union Grove (25-5-2) will play the winner of Ware County-Houston County, which split their doubleheader, next Wednesday.
Crisp County 4-3, Eagle’s Landing 3-2
The Lady Golden Eagles lost a pair of one-run games on the road in the first round of the Class AAAA state playoffs.
Eagle’s Landing (13-17) saw its season end with a 3-2 loss in eight innings in Game 2.
Tiffany Taylor pitched both games and allowed just three total earned runs. Jayla Stewart went 3-for-4 with an RBI in Game 1 and added another RBI in Game 2.
Dodge County 20-15, Henry County 1-0
The Lady Hawks lost on the road in their Class AAA first round doubleheader.
Henry County lost both games in three innings.
