McDONOUGH — A change in McDonough’s charter that could change how city government operates, will be the subject of a town hall meeting Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 136 Keys Ferry St.

The meeting, led by the law firm of Henderson and Hundley, will allow residents to learn more about the referendum on the Nov. 6 ballot. At issue is a whether or not mayoral powers include administrative duties or if those duties should be designated for a city administrator.

The McDonough City Council voted in March to ask the Georgia General Assembly to support legislation enacting a revised version of its 2003 city charter. The revised document passed by a vote of 5 to 2, with Mayor Billy Copeland and District 3 Councilman Wayne Smith casting the dissenting votes.

Wake up people of Mcdonough, voting no gives the Mayor authority to fire at his pleasure the city administrator and employess. Do not fall for the Voting No on this bill. Vote YES and keep the City balance of POWER in CHECK. The city administrator implements the desire of the Mayor and Council, which is your checks and balances. People, always be very cautious giving a single elected person absolute power. The reason to vote YES is because Mayor and Council together can change the day to day adminstration at will. The administrative roll of an elected official cannot be changed for four years, however, if their is a non performing hired administrator, he or she can be removed by a vote of council. Read your history, absolute power corrupts absolutely!!! VOTE YES!!!!!!!!!
