Officials: No charges in spring bus stop accident

LOCUST GROVE — No charges will be filed against the driver of the vehicle that hit a sixth-grader at his school bus stop.

Thomas Conor Burch, 11, died April 12 from his injuries. He was the son of Locust Grove police Clerk Bernadette Burch and Henry County police Capt. Jim Burch.

Henry County Police Sgt. Joey Smith said the department’s traffic unit assisted the state with investigating the cause of the accident.

The Georgia State Patrol reported this week it will not be bringing charges in the crash, said GSP spokesman Gordy Wright. He said troopers examined video and interviews in making the decision.

“It was determined from the video and witness interviews that the bus had amber lights activated at the time,” said Wright.

Wright said the bus had not come to a stop and had not activated the red lights and stop arm when the Locust Grove Middle School sixth-grader entered the path of the van.

This week is National School Bus Safety Week and officials are reminding all residents to be aware of their surroundings and use extra caution on the roadways, particularly around school buses and at bus stops.
