The Chargers rose three spots to No. 1 in this week’s Associated Press poll, which was released on Tuesday afternoon. ELCA started the season at No. 1 in the preseason poll but dropped to No. 6 after its season-opening loss to Washington (24-19), which was No. 5 in Class AAA entering the game.
After its 32-7win at Alabama power Briarwood Christian in Birmingham, the Chargers moved to No. 4 heading into last week’s showdown with Clinch County. The Chargers dominated that contest 47-20 after leading 40-0 at halftime.
The game was a rematch of the 2010 Class A quarterfinals, which Clinch County won 34-27 en route to the state championship. ELCA played last Friday’s game without starters Keyante Green, Isaac Rochell and D.J. Curl, who are all recovering from injuries.
ELCA (2-1) takes on Hapeville Charter on Friday in its final non-region game of the season. Hapeville is 1-1 with a win over North Springs last week. The Hornets opened the season with a loss to Prince Avenue Christian.
Lovejoy, which had its 22-game regular season winning streak snapped last week in Colquitt County, is ranked No. 10 in Class AAAAAA. The Wildcats entered the poll for the first time last week at No. 9.
