Each week the Henry Daily Herald will track the progress of potential high school football player of the year candidates throughout the season.
Here is an updated ranking of who’s in the running based on last week’s performances.
1. Donovahn Jones, Dutchtown: The senior quarterback might be one of the most exciting players in the state. He has led the Bulldogs offense with his passing and rushing skills. Two weeks ago, he passed for 195 yards in a win over Henry County. In last week’s win over Luella, the Missouri commitment rushed for 128 yards and three touchdowns.
2. Josh Shockley, ELCA: With several of ELCA’s standout senior players sidelined with injuries, the junior linebacker has been holding his own. He has been a big part of the reason the Chargers are ranked No. 1 in the state in Class A by the Associated Press poll.
3. JoJo Spann, Ola: The senior has been one of the bright spots for the Mustangs this season. He has scored at least one touchdown in the first three games. Last week, he returned a blocked kick for a score. Spann had a four touchdown performance in a loss to Locust Grove in Week 2 of the season.
4. Keyante Green, ELCA: The senior running back has missed the last two games with a leg injury. Prior to the injury, the Purdue commitment as having another superb season with 225 yards rushing and five touchdowns. He is also a standout member of the team’s defense as a linebacker. He is expected to return to the lineup for the top-ranked Chargers first region game on Sept. 29.
5. Keenan Wise, Locust Grove: The senior quarterback has the Wildcats off to a solid start. Last week, he had 314 yards of offense and three touchdowns in a win over Morrow. For the season, he has rushed for 243 yards on 37 carries and has passed for 434 yards. As a receiver, he has five catches for 46 yards.
