McDONOUGH — The sound of music and smell of food layered the park atmosphere Friday at the Sixth Annual McDonough Jerk Festival.

The festival, sponsored by SDW Event Marketing and Jamaica’s Finest Restaurant, is a two-day event at Alexander Park, 300 Atlanta St. It continues Saturday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.

Sylvia Dennis-Wray of McDonough is one of the event’s organizers. She said the community gathering serves as a fundraiser for her eight-member McDonough Jerk Festival Team which is participating in the Oct. 6 Walk to End Alzheimer’s Southern Crescent.

Dennis-Wray said her support of the Alzheimer’s Association and its research began about five years ago, when her mother was diagnosed with the disease.

She is one of the team’s captains for the 3-mile walk, which begins at 9:30 a.m. at Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater in Peachtree City. Her team expects to contribute toward the walk’s goal of $200,000.

“Last year, we raised $500,” said Dennis-Wray. “This year, I’m looking to double that. I believe that God is going to continue to bless us. I’m excited.”

This weekend’s festivities will include food, games, music and free health screenings for blood pressure and glucose. Dennis-Wray said there will also be raffles for prizes donated by local businesses.
