Jeff Hurndon Photography Former Georgia Tech cornerback Rod Sweeting (No. 6) has been selected to play in the annual East-West Shrine Game next weekend in Florida.

With his business management degree already secured, Rod Sweeting is hoping to advance his athletic career a little farther before entering the job market.

The former Luella High and Georgia Tech standout will get a chance to test his skills against some standout competition next week in an all-star game. Sweeting, who was named MVP of the Sun Bowl, was selected to play in the annual East-West Shrine Game in Florida.

There are currently 52 players from that game that were on active NFL rosters this past season. This year’s game, which will take place Jan. 19 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., will kick off at 4 p.m.

It will be televised live on the NFL Network.

Also selected to the all-star game from Georgia Tech was defensive end Izaan Cross.

The two teammates will play for the East squad, which will be coached by former NFL coach Jerry Glanville, who had a stint with the Falcons. Ironically, the colorful Glanville is also a one-time Yellow Jackets assistant.

“The East-West Shrine Game has always fielded players among college football's best,” said East-West Shrine Game Executive Director Harold Richardson in a statement. “With all 32 NFL teams represented by GMs, coaches and scouts during game week, our players have the terrific opportunity to showcase their talents and get their first glimpse of life in the NFL ... ‘Just Like on Sunday.’”

In the 21-7 Sun Bowl victory over Southern California on Dec. 21, Sweeting recorded three assisted tackles. The cornerback also had a fumble recovery and two interceptions while helping limit the Trojans to only 205 yards of offense and 10 first downs.

Coming out of Luella High in 2009, Sweeting was considered a four-star prospect by several of the major recruiting services.
