Atlanta Motor Speedway President and General Manager Ed Clark is the points leader in the Master's division at the Winter Flurry. He can pick up his sixth career win in the event on Saturday in the finals.
HAMPTON — As mother nature signals the end of the winter season, so too is the Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Winter Flurry racing series coming to a close.
But if the action on the quarter mile “Thunder Ring” this season is any indication, it won’t be just the weather heating up as we approach the spring and summer months.
“This has been one of the best year’s we’ve ever had at the Winter Flurry,” said Brandon Hutchison, Vice President of Events at AMS. “Each year is gaining momentum. Hopefully it’ll translate into a good summer.”
The seven-race series has featured some of the familiar names of the popular summer Thursday Thunder series — young, budding stars in the sport like Semi-Pro competitors Riley Thornton and Taylor Jorgenson, Bandits leader Zach Leonhardi and Young Lions racers Payton Ryan and Madeline Crane.
Even AMS President and General Manager Ed Clark is looking to get in on the action, racing in the Masters Division.
“I basically just have to start my car and go,” said Clark who is the overall leader in the Masters and Pro division. “I’ve already got it warm. It’d be great to get a win.”
Today will be the last opportunity for the spring racers to grab a checkered flag. Not only will Clark be looking for an overall win in the series, Semi-Pro contender and Peachtree City native Riley Thornton will be going for his third straight victory.
Although bleacher seating is closed for the Winter Flurry season, a limited number of infield passes will be available for fans at the Security Command building near the speedway’s main entrance.
Infield access costs $12 for adults, $5 for children ages six through 11, and admission is free for children ages five and younger.
The Thursday Thunder season will begin in June, and Clark also believes that the concluding Flurry action will serve as a suitable preview.
“I know this summer is going to be a lot of competition when the other guys come in here,” Clark said.
Said Hutchison: “We’re truly looking forward to a great finish to the season.”
