Luella 2, Newton 0: The Lions extended their winning streak to four games with a Region 2-AAAAAA victory at home.
Luella (7-5, 5-1) broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the sixth inning. With runners on second and third and one out, Jordan Brock hit an RBI single and Brandon Riley followed with a run-scoring double to give Lions starting pitcher Damion Fondren all the cushion he needed.
Fondren pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just one hit and striking out seven. Fondren was a model of efficiency, needing 71 pitches to finish a game that lasted just 1 hour 25 minutes. It was the third straight complete game performance by a Lions starting pitcher.
Ola 8, Drew 1: The Mustangs cruised to a Region 4-AAAAA victory on the road.
Spencer Maycock pitched five shutout innings to earn the win. He allowed just two hits and struck out four for the Mustangs (11-3, 6-3).
Andrew Sarsany led Ola at the plate going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Union Grove 17, Mundy’s Mill 0: The Wolverines cruised to a Region 4-AAAA victory in four innings on the road.
Junior starting pitcher Kyle Spinks pitched three innings to earn the win while Andy Callocchio, Jake Pope, Ryan Sapp and Mason McClellan each had two hits for Union Grove (10-5, 8-3).
Locust Grove 4, Eagle’s Landing 1: The Lady Wildcats remained perfect with a crucial Region 4-AAAA victory on the road.
No. 9-ranked Locust Grove (10-0, 6-0) got two goals apiece from Hannah Smith and Alex Travis. The duo helped the Lady Wildcats take a 3-0 lead at halftime against Eagle’s Landing (4-6, 4-3).
McIntosh 5, Union Grove 0: The Lady Wolverines dropped their fourth straight with a Region 4-AAAAA loss at home.
Union Grove (8-4-2, 5-3-0) trailed just 1-0 at halftime to No. 5-ranked McIntosh (7-3-2), the defending Class AAAA champions, but fell victim to injuries and couldn’t keep up with the Lady Indians in the second half.
The loss extended the Lady Wolverines’ winless streak to six straight games.
