ORRIN MORRIS: Is it time to end your spiritual drought?

YELLOW WOOD, SORRELOxalis stricta

A 40-day period of time was recorded in the Bible seven times: the flood, Moses on Mt. Sinai, time the spies spent examining Canaan for conquest, Goliath taunting the Hebrew army, Elijah’s flight from King Ahab, Jesus’ desert meditation after his baptism and the post-resurrection days before Jesus ascended.

Perhaps Jesus’ 40 days in the desert for preparation for his public ministry was the 325 AD model. Matthew 4:1-2 reads, “Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.” (KJV) In the Catholic tradition fasting is more than just not eating for a day, it means abstaining from something good, such as chocolate, pizza, or video games. It is an act that constantly reminds us of the importance devotion to God has in our daily life.
