Fiery multi-vehicle crash kills 2 in Stockbridge

STOCKBRIDGE — Two people are dead and an unknown number were hospitalized after a multi-vehicle accident on I-75 South near Hudson Bridge Road on Tuesday.

Around 9:18 p.m., Henry County First Responders were dispatched to the scene. A Honda Accord with no lights on had broken down in the right-hand lane. Police say a Freightliner tractor-trailer hit two other cars, then hit the Accord. The truck and other vehicles then burst into flames.

The driver of the Accord, Leland D. Wilson, 40, of Thomaston, and the driver of an Audio coupe, Sylvia P. Welch, 59, of McDonough, died at the scene. Other victims with non-life-threatening injuries were taken to hospitals.

According to Henry County Police spokesman Capt. Joey Smith, “Preliminary investigation revealed the disabled vehicle was the initial cause of the accident,” which remains under investigation.
