McDONOUGH — Henry County police have captured an armed man who allegedly shot a woman in a domestic incident and three-car accident that shut down Racetrack Road for several hours Thursday.

SWAT team members caught the man shortly after sunset, about 6:30 p.m. Thursday, after a heavy police presence had cordoned off a large wooded area between Racetrack Road and the Publix grocery store. Police Tased the suspect and took him into custody.

All afternoon, a Georgia State Patrol helicopter flew low over the treetops as Henry County Police, Henry County Sheriff's Office deputies, McDonough Police and GSP troopers surrounded the area.

HCPD spokesman Capt. Randy Lee said the woman was trying to flee in a black car after the pair had argued at a nearby home. She backed out of the driveway at high speed into oncoming traffic, colliding with a white SUV and a silver car. Allegedly, she then ran from the vehicle as the man chased her, then shot her and fled into the woods.

The woman was transported to Grady Hospital and is in stable condition. Two other people suffered minor injuries in the traffic accident.

Henry County Schools put McDonough Middle School and McDonough High School on hard lockdown while the search was underway.

Lee said more details on the incident would be released Friday morning.
