Exceptions approved for centralized mailbox locations in new neighborhoods

A resolution approved by commissioners Tuesday allows for centralized mailbox units to be located in the right-of-way of new subdivisions under certain conditions.(Special Photo)

McDONOUGH— As new subdivisions are being built around Henry County, the Henry County Building and Plan Review staff is attempting to make it easier for developers to adhere to the United States Postal Service’s centralized mailbox unit (CBU) mandate.

In 2012, the USPS issued a directive nationwide stating that new subdivisions, including additions and phases of existing subdivisions— except where permission is granted by USPS— have centralized mailboxes rather than each home having its own curbside mailbox in order to improve efficiency.
