Members from the school nutrition department pass out meals to Henry County students.

MCDONOUGH –Henry County Schools Seamless Summer Feeding Program is set to kick in on Monday.

This means students will receive a week’s worth of food every Wednesday instead of three times a week. Meal pickups will still be offered at the six distribution sites — Hampton Middle, Locust Grove Elementary, McDonough Middle, Oakland Elementary, Stockbridge Middle and Wesley Lakes Elementary — from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Students will receive five breakfasts and five lunches to cover weekdays.

The summer feeding program operates in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Georgia School Nutrition Program. Meals are free for children up to 18 years of age. Individuals with special needs up to 21 years of age may also receive the meals.

As a part of the requirements for participation in the summer feeding programs, students must be in the vehicle when arriving to the distribution sites.

The school district has served over 132,000 meals since starting the meal distribution pick-up option on March 18 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. School Nutrition Executive Director Kantrell Brown has witnessed the impact it has had on her staff and the families they have served.

“Our staff cares for the students in the schools like they are their own children,” said Brown. “The opportunity to continue to serve them and see them was revitalizing for the staff during this tough time. As exciting as it was for our staff, it was even more uplifting for our students. The chance to see familiar faces providing a nutritious meal to them brought the greatest joy to our students. The parents continued to express heartfelt thanks for the meals, too.”

While the summer meal program will not officially start until Wednesday after the last day of school, community partners at Operation Lunchbox will be stepping in on Monday, May 18 to provide two lunches and two breakfasts for families at the same sites and time to cover the two days the school nutrition staff will not be in operation.
