McDONOUGH — The Henry County Board of Commissioners gave the green light to Pond & Company to update the county’s Comprehensive Transportation Plan and to develop a trails master plan.
The plan will identify short, mid- and long-term transportation projects and needs through 2050.
A trail system map will be developed using existing and proposed trails, along with a funding strategy and potential names and logos.
The cost to the county is an estimated $88,000. Funding includes a $500,000 contribution from the Atlanta Regional Commission and approximately $37,000 from the county’s four municipalities.
Sam Baker, Transportation Planning director, said the cost is a “very good value,” adding that Pond & Company lowered its initial fee from $750,000 to $625,000 to earn the county’s business.
Henry County last updated its transportation plan in 2016. Last May, Baker recommended the county revisit and update the plan due to continued growth and ongoing traffic congestion.
Later this year, Henry County voters will be asked to approve a Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax to fund transportation projects. The county’s goal is to raise an estimated $204 million over a five-year period.
If approved in November, collections will begin on April 1, 2022.
