McDONOUGH — Hundreds of early voters lined Atlanta Street and beyond Monday, the first day to cast an early ballot for the Nov. 3 General Election, with some voters standing in line for hours before reaching the voting machines.

The story was much the same across the east metro region. In Rockdale County, Elections Supervisor Cynthia Willingham said a couple of factors — in addition to the large turnout and social distancing requirements — contributed to the wait times. Willingham said the State Voter Registration System was processing voters extremely slowly. “For example, it would usually take us less than two minutes to process a voter,” Willingham said in an email. “However, due to the lag in the system, it is taking up to four minutes to process a voter.”

In addition, since many in-person voters have already requested an absentee ballot by mail, Willingham said poll workers are having to cancel the mailed ballot so they can vote in person. “This is an additional step we have to perform in the State Voter Registration System,” she said.

Henry County officials have six locations set up for residents to cast a ballot. Those who choose to vote via an absentee ballot can mail it in or use the county-provided ballot box at the Elections Office, 40 Atlanta St. It is the only box to be used for absentee voting.
