Ola wins Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl

Special Photo Austin Road Middle School Principal Cheryl Carter recently was selected the Henry County Branch of the NAACP’s 2012 Educator of the Year. Carter has been a principal for more than 20 years at the elementary and middle school levels, and has been the principal at Austin Road Middle School since 2010.

Ola High Schools Reading Bowl Team took first place at the high school level, during the 2012 Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl. The McDonough team defeated Veterans High School in Kathleen, Ga., to win the state championship title on March 24, at the Childrens Conference at the University of Georgia in Athens.

Bowl organizers said the team advanced to the state finals by winning at the local, regional and divisional levels. Union Grove Middle School in McDonough also advanced to the state finals for middle school teams, but was defeated by Hilsman Middle School in Athens, Ga.
