This is my last column for the Daily Herald and my last week in this news office. I start Monday at the AJC, in the Clayton-Henry office, covering cops and some court. I am saying "so long" to some folks but not good-bye because I expect to continue working with the people on my beat, just for a different newspaper. I spent the last week enjoying my vacation in New York City, the greatest city in the world, and fantasizing once again about living and working there.

I have written more than once about transportation in this part of Georgia and I know I am preaching to the choir when I say more needs to be done to address the horrible commuting conditions. However, I think we have much to be thankful for when compared to what folks go through every day in New York. I stayed on Long Island last week and had to commute into Manhattan to make the most of my vacation. Every day I got on the Long Island Railroad and rode into Penn Station on 34th Street. Then I either found the subway I needed to get where I wanted to go or I hit the streets and walked or hopped a bus.
