The other day, I was discussing movies with my editor and the subject came around to W.C. Fields in The Bank Dick . I had reluctantly seen the movie at the persistence of my friend Scot some years ago. I was dreading the viewing, wondering how a mumbling man with a bulbous nose – I can still remember imaging how red his nose would have looked in color – could actually be my cup of tea. Needless to say that I loved the film and it paved the way to old Hollywood for me.

These days I don't think kids and teenagers have enough interest in seeing old or classic films simply because they are in black & white or seem stale and stagnant compared to today's fast paced visual assaults. I can understand this, a few years ago I felt the same way. However, if you are big into film then I suggest renting some movies that may have influenced your current favorites. If you like the films of M. Night Shyamalan then you will probably like Alfred Hitchcock and definitely the old Twilight Zone series by Rod Serling. Some of those old Twilight shows have more kick and are fresher than most things on television today, except maybe Lost, which of course also owes something to the Zone.
