My cousin turned 50 Friday, so I took a few days off from work and flew back home to St. Louis to help her celebrate. Most readers know I am from St. Louis and visit as much as I can. Despite having lived more of my life in Georgia, my heart remains in St. Louis and always will. My family moved us to Georgia at a crucial time in my life. I was almost a teenager, getting ready to go into junior high school, when I was dragged, kicking and screaming, from the only life I ever knew into a world filled with strangers and even stranger customs and traditions.

I entered junior high school with kids who’d gone to school with each other since kindergarten. I left the kids I’d gone to school with since kindergarten. My classmates went on to Pattonville High School, their names and faces dissipating in my memory as the years replace each other.
