Velma Lorrine Couch McCracken, age 82 of Jackson, Georgia passed away on July 25, 2019 after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. She passed peacefully in her home surrounded by her beloved family. Born Velma Loraine Jackson on March 26, 1937 to William and Bessie (Granger) Jackson of Adairsville, Georgia. She is survived by her husband Keith McCracken of Jackson, GA: children William Ray Bishop (Nancy) of Atlanta, Sherry Lynn Bishop of Acworth, Charles Emory Bishop (Debra) of McDonough; brother Walter Jackson of Tyler, TX; sister Shirley Bagley of Gay; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Velma began her 5 decade career working for Griffin-Spalding County Hospital and retiring from Henry General Hospital. She started in the Radiology Department, eventually focusing her skills in Mammography. This led her to her lifelong involvement with the American Cancer Society as she directed her talents to women's breast health. She remained on the leading edge of her field which lead to her developing many educational programs, teaching breast health through various seminars, and conducting community outreach events to teach about the importance of breast exams for women. In addition, She taught Radiology at the former Griffin-Spalding County Area Vocational Technical School for many years. Velma played a key role in the passage of House Bill 538 which required that all Georgia insurance companies provide coverage for mammograms, pap smears and prostate specific antigen blood tests. The bill was signed into law by Governor Zell Miller on April 16, 1992 and ultimately saved the life of her husband and many others. Velma has received many awards for her work and dedication to breast care education. Throughout her life she gave her all, made an impact, and remained faithful to her profession, her family, and her Lord and Savior. "Well done thy good and faithful servant." A visitation will be held on Thursday, August 1, 2019, 6-8 pm at the Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, August 2, 2019 at 11 am in the Chapel of the funeral home. Pastor Duane Crane will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to either the Alzheimer's Association or the American Cancer Society in her honor.
