As Trump leaves office, where will Republicans go in 2024?

If you watched last week's virtual Democratic convention, you heard about an America with which you might not be familiar. Speaker after speaker portrayed America as a failing nation full of misery, poverty and angst that only they can make better.

This column usually offers a safe space from politics, but occasionally I have to wade into the deep water. After all, everyone is talking about the coronavirus, the stock market, and the presidential election.

So there I was, sitting at home after a hard day’s work, looking for peace and tranquility. Naturally, I turned on the television, in search of intelligent life on the cable news channels.

It's an accident of timing that the funeral of George H. W. Bush occurred within days of the anniversary of Pearl Harbor. But it's no accident that Americans have marked the passing of the former President with an outpouring of respect and admiration typically reserved for war heroes. They remember his presidency, to be sure, but they recall in a deeper way his generation of Americans, a generation indelibly stamped by the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and the war that followed.
