Hampton head coach Chad Ashley (right) was named the All-County Coach of the Year following an impressive season with the Hornets.

McDONOUGH — The time to wrap up the football season has come and with it the Henry Herald All-County list places a bow on the decade.

The All-County list features some of the top players from Henry County programs this year as the top plays and programs were plentiful.

Offensive Player of the Year Nate McCollum was an offensive nightmare for teams that lined up opposite him. From the running game, where he’d sneak in to a deep catch along the sideline, McCollum helped the Bulldogs along this season.

Baylen Sanders was probably the most unlikely player to earn the Defensive Player of the Year award. If the Ola defense was on the field, Sanders was prone to making a big play and often times, rarely missed the moment to shine.

Coach of the Year honors had to go to a program this year and between Union Grove High’s Chad Frazier and Hampton’s Chad Ashley, the latter had to earn the award. Ashley built the Hornets up, piece by piece ever since the school opened. Add in the fact that Hampton reached the playoffs for the first time in school history, it’s no wonder that the Hornets have a bright future ahead.

Special Teams Player of the Year Antoine Johnson, Jr. could be considered a surprising figure. Considering how much Eagle’s Landing relied on his ability to flip the field, Johnson earned the award.

Probably the most under-rated team this year in Henry County was McDonough High School. Don’t let the fact that it’s a new facility fool the masses, it’s still beating with the Henry County athletes that reached the playoffs last year. The Unsung Player of the Year was Orri Roberts.

Roberts returned from an injury to help the Warhawks nearly reach the playoffs for the second year in a row with a new head coach. Had it not been for Roberts’ play elevating the program, it’s no telling how the team would have developed in 2019.
