MCDONOUGH — Every team that faces Jonesboro is single-minded in its goal: Beat the defending, two-time state champion.

Eagle’s Landing (5-1) surely had the same thought in mind Tuesday night, when the Golden Eagles hosted the Cardinals for the teams’ first contest of the season. The Golden Eagles, who actually won the state championship the year prior to Jonesboro’s first title, took an 11-8 lead in the first quarter. They appeared poised to extend their season-opening win streak to six games.
