Eagle’s Landing High tipped off and pulled out the victory Friday night to head to Sweet 16.

McDONOUGH — The Lady Eagles from Eagle’s Landing had just one thing to do Friday night and it all just added up to reaching Elite Eight in Class AAAAA.

First, the final score was pretty much decided in the first half of the 69-31 game. Even if the Lady Golden Eagles didn’t score for 16 minutes, which is a pipe dream in itself, South Effingham wasn’t in a position to challenge the squad all night.

Secondly, Karshaun Peterson didn’t use a timeout. Yes, Eagle’s Landing head coach Peterson refused to use a timeout during the game. Third, Eagle’s Landing punched their ticket to Sweet 16 with little resistance.

“We try to play to force the other team to call timeout,” Peterson said after the game. “It was just one of those situations where I was ready to call a timeout but they just beat us to it. It just got to a point where we didn’t have to use them.”

After the first quarter, it was apparent that Eagle’s Landing was going to be the team to beat as South Effingham struggled heavily. But it wasn’t easy as South Effingham actually scored first in the game.

Eagle’s Landing also missed their first five straight shots. A bit uncharacteristic for the Peterson led squad. But it wasn’t worth having any fear over.

“They ate late and the food didn’t get a chance to digest so they were just a little sluggish,” Peterson said. “What they ate was just heavy. We know better than that.”

But they got it going in their own way without even needing a timeout. Factor in Jaleah Storr knocked down a three before the quarter ended and Eagle’s Landing was ahead 14-6.

When the second quarter began, South Effingham was just unable to get across half-court most of the time as Eagle’s Landing forced turnovers and then shooting for the visitor team wasn’t great either.

For nearly five minutes, 4:58 to be exact, South Effingham was in a drought and the Lady Eagles were just rocketing ahead on a 15-0 run. The scoring in the second quarter for the Lady Mustangs came from two free throws and nice layup but Eagle’s Landing led 36-10 when the halftime buzzer sounded.

From there, Eagle’s Landing never let off the gas against their opponent and Peterson never called timeout. Ultimately, Eagle’s Landing outscore their foe 33-21 to reach the Sweet 16 round.
