Locust Grove product Billy Ward likely will make his college debut Saturday when Georgia Tech opens the football season at Florida State.
Ward, a 6-foot-3, 260-pound freshman tight end for the Yellow Jackets, is one of three players at his position listed above-the-line on the team’s pregame depth chart.
“Billy is really strong and a capable blocker,” Georgia Tech offensive coordinator Dave Patenaude said. “He’s got to develop being able to be out in space. But from the run game perspective, he’s able to face people up and put a body on people.”
Most of the snaps will likely go to Dylan Leonard and Dylan Deveney, who both played substantially last year as true freshmen. But the Yellow Jackets use a lot of players and Ward is likely to get an opportunity to play.
“It’s tough to put a freshman out there,” Patenaude said. “We have to have a package of stuff they’re able to do that they feel comfortable with.”
