McDONOUGH — Locust Grove locked up the Region 4-AAAAA regular season title Thursday night with a 4-1 win over second-place Jones County.

The Lady Wildcats went up 3-0 in the early innings before Jones County scored its first run in the fourth. That was all the combination of Brooke McCubbin and Layla Baron would give up, as the Locust Grove duo allowed one run on eight hits.

Locust Grove was led offensively by Bailee Richardson, who drove in a run on two hits. Chandler Mitchell and Skylar Elkins also recorded RBIs.

The Lady Wildcats officially finished the regular season with a perfect 14-0 record in region play. Locust Grove will be the No. 1 seed in next week’s region tournament. By design, both Locust Grove and second-place Jones County will get byes in the region tournament and will be part of the region’s four state tournament teams.

Elsewhere, Ola and Union Grove’s game for third place in the region was postponed until Saturday due to rain. Union Grove can clinch the No. 3 seed with a win, but an Ola win by four or more runs would see them jump into the three spot.

Woodland, Eagle’s Landing, Stockbridge and Dutchtown, in order, rounded out the remainder of the region standings.

Hampton will be the No. 1 seed in the Region 4-AAAA tournament next week. Luella will be the No. 4 seed and Henry County will be No. 6 seed.
