Union Grove’s boys and girls teams got off to a good start in the Henry County Track and Field Championships this week before rain storms washed out the event’s completion.

The Wolverines scored 64 points Monday in the girls division for a 29-point edge over second-place Woodland, while the boys team had 50 points for a nine-point lead over second-place Ola. The meet’s remaining events were scheduled for Wednesday, but weather forced a move to April 13.

Union Grove’s girls won three events already, two courtesy of its talented group of distance runners. Gabby Parsons won the 1,600-meter run in 5 minutes, 22.55 seconds, followed by teammates Bianca Parsons (5:25.21) and Carson Brantley (5:37.84) in a 1-2-3 finish.

Brantley, Lilly Dunn, Brianna Reed and Kalkidan Hawkins teamed up for a victory in the 3,200 relay in 10:26.48, and Christine Chambers won the triple jump at 34 feet, 10 inches.

Union Grove’s boys team won two events — Christian Troy in the pole vault (11-6) and Quentin Peterson in the shot put (51-4).

Locust Grove’s boys also fared well behind its distance group, led by Daniel Townsend. Townsend won the 1,600 in 4:34.45, crossing first in a tight finish with Ola’s Elijah Sires (second, 4:34.76) and Strong Rock Christian’s Noah Kilgore (third, 4:35.05).

Townsend also joined Trenton Labrum, Jake Pearson and Jack Pringle on a championship 3,200 relay (8:23.18).

Eagle’s Landing got a boys win from Amari Jackson in the long jump at 22-9 3/4, and Stockbridge’s girls got two county titles from Carrington Wilson in the high jump (4-10) and Jae’l Dunn in the discus (129-4).
