My 4-year-old Boxer is a terrible guard dog. We don’t employ her for that role, anyway, and not just because someone could barge in our front door and hold me at knifepoint while she happily snuffed snot on the intruder and ran in circles. But if a delivery or box truck was ever attempting to attack me, she would at least bark incessantly until it was out of view. Or had run me over and turned me into a paste on the asphalt.Â
Call it a Pavlovian reaction, but anytime she hears the clatter of a diesel engine, she’ll run to the front windows ready to bark incessantly at a UPS truck or fleet van that dares drive along our street. The diesel engine signals that someone will be getting out of that car, and that means I need to be on guard to sniff them, her thought process seems to be.
