MCDONOUGH — Every year, approximately 12,000 women ages 40 and under are diagnosed with breast cancer, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. It is the most common form of cancer amongst women in the world and the second most common cancer in American women. However, if the cancer is detected early and has not spread to other parts of the body, the five-year relative survival rate is 99%, according to the American Cancer Society.
Early detection is a key part in breast cancer treatment and ensuring that it does not spread to other parts of the body. Women should do breast self-exams every month to help easily identify any changes in their breasts. Common symptoms of breast cancer can vary, from a change in skin texture to feeling a lump in the breast. While self-exams can help detect signs of breast cancer, a mammogram is the best way for females to find breast cancer early since it can detect the tumor before symptoms start to show.
