Mobile carriers in the United States have spent tens of billions of dollars in a race to build out their 5G networks. Now, they're eager to get consumers using — and paying for — the new wireless network technology.

The launch of the first 5G iPhone marks the biggest opportunity yet to do that, kicking off renewed competition among the big network providers. AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile all announced aggressive promotions for the device.
