I drive 18 miles to work every day, one way, from Fayetteville. It isn't the farthest I've ever had to drive to work, or the shortest, which is what I prefer.

When I lived in Aiken, S.C., I worked a mile from home. That was great. I could wait until the last minute to leave for the office and still not be late. But for my first job, I drove about 30 miles into Gray from Macon, one way. I was na?ve and never thought about the distance or the cost of gas or anything like that. I was just thrilled to have a paying job and a listing on my resume.
