New license plates catching on slowly

“Registered vehicle owners having a license plate issued after Dec. 1, 2003, and having the plate heading www.Georgia.gov — including any vanity, prestige, veteran, college or university, or any other specialty license plate — will be replaced beginning May of 2013,” according to a news release from the Georgia Department of Revenue, which oversees the distribution of license plates.

The roll out of a new Georgia license plate is off to a sluggish start in Clayton and Henry counties, according to local tax officials.

County-level tax offices across the state began distributing new license plates Monday. The car tags feature the image of an open field, with a few peaches, and a magnolia tree in the foreground, under the heading Peach State Georgia. They were designed by Forsyth resident Linda Sosebee, who won a statewide tag design competition last year. An alternative, simple white tag, with a peach in the middle is also available.
