I was recently reminded of three months I spent in a hospital. Sometime after starting the second grade I came down with boils. I was 7. The boils were purple and black and all over my body. Because my dad was in the Air Force, mom took me to the hospital at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Ala. The emergency room doctor did not know what it was.

These days he could contact the CDC, but it didn’t exist in the ’40s.
