REV. TONY ELDER: A new year is a chance for a fresh start

Rev. Tony Elder

In the past I’ve mentioned how I have exposed my grandchildren to one of my favorite TV series, “The Andy Griffith Show.” Recently my wife introduced them to one of her beloved programs, the PBS series, “Anne of Green Gables.” I’m talking about the classic filmed version of the story, the one starring Megan Follows – not any of the more recent remakes which in our sight can never measure up to the previous Emmy Award-winning edition.

While there are many memorable scenes from the show, it also contains some inspiring ideas and quotes. I like the one that is brought out in the course of Anne’s conversation with her teacher. It’s the idea that tomorrow is always fresh and new with no mistakes in it. It’s a helpful reminder that we don’t have to be defined by our past or feel hopelessly trapped in previous habits of harmful behavior. It’s possible to make a fresh start.
