To the editor:

We, as concerned citizens, do not want to see Henry County turned into another Clayton or Gwinnett (or worse.) There are models out there that work, there are ways to make it work: building moratoriums, if needed; build the infrastructure; plan real communities with traffic patterns that work around them. We simply must slow down the growth and let the tax base catch up to what we need here and now. You, I am sure, would be the first to agree that different parts of the county offer something different to each of its residents. To be offering developers the chance to put cluster homes up right smack in the middle of an area that has minimum 1-acre lots and larger is simply wrong. In doing over two years of research on where we wanted to be in Henry County, we could clearly see the difference between some parts and others. Look at Kellytown, then, say, Lake Dow, then out Ga. Highway 20 on the east side, all very different than the type of housing you see in the southern end, or especially the west side. There are socioeconomic principles that drive each district no matter which direction you go, and it's generally tied to the housing market. There are lower-income areas, and higher-income areas. However, in general, homeowners tend to want to buy like-kind housing in a particular area if for no other reason than to protect their investment, as well as their way of life. For homeowners to invest in new homes at one price and within a year or so have more pop up right next door at half the price helps nobody but the developer.
