The Hadron Collider promises to re-create conditions which replicate the Big Bang that some scientists believe created the universe.

The collider is a 17-mile ring constructed deep underground, beneath the border between Switzerland and France. The $9 billion collider is powered by magnets chilled to a few degrees above absolute 0 (-271C). It is capable of moving beams of protons in a loop at speeds close to the speed of light, then collide them head-on.
