MECCA: Investigative journalism is dead - and it’s threatening our freedom

Pete Mecca

Investigative journalism is dead.

Those exact words, “investigative journalism is dead,” were spoken to me by a district level editor/publisher of a major news publication. He suggested that I “slant” my weekly article, “A Veteran’s Story,” to reflect a more “progressive” agenda. I immediately refused, and no longer write for him — nor will I ever write for a publication willing to misuse veterans to promote their own political agenda. The man also stated, “You don’t understand, Pete, today all newspapers have their own agenda.” When did “freedom of the press” give mainstream media the right to influence national politics with half-truths, misquotes, favoritism, and in frequent instances, flat out lies?
