It's almost impossible to win college football's top individual award without playing for a great team, which explains why Jamie Newman jumped to the fourth-betting favorite in early 2020 Heisman Trophy odds on Saturday.
Newman, who previously played quarterback at Wake Forest, confirmed Saturday that he would soon enroll at Georgia as a graduate transfer for the spring semester. The betting market quickly reacted, as DraftKings Sportsbook shortened his Heisman odds from +2000 to +900.
The top three favorites remain unchanged -- Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields (+300), Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence (+400) and Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler (+600). Fields and Lawrence will be established juniors in 2020, while Rattler is expected to take control of the Sooners' quarterback factory after playing sparingly as a true freshman in 2019 behind senior Jalen Hurts.
Newman announced his decision three days after Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm declared for the NFL draft.
Newman completed 60.9 percent of his passes for 2,868 yards with 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 2019, adding 574 rushing yards and six scores. He guided the Demon Deacons to an 8-5 season, which ended with a 27-21 loss to Michigan State in the Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 27.
Another potential quarterback transfer, Houston senior D'Eriq King, has not yet announced his 2020 plans. He was considered a potential target for Georgia, but with that option off the table, he flipped odds with Newman. King dropped from +900 last week to +2000 on Saturday at DraftKings.
